about me…
I like to say that my art is what happens at the intersection of wit and whimsy, but it’s really about differences of all kinds. I love to pull you in with bold colors and playful subject matter, engage you with pattern, amuse you with metaphor, confound you with irony, and allow the tension of contradictions expand your mind and stretch the imagination.
During my career as a graphic designer, I became infatuated with composition, color and text. These components made their way into my current work and are responsible for the oftentimes advertorial nature of my paintings. The remainder of my inspiration comes from a fondness for vintage everything including toys, packaging, book illustrations, circus sideshows, carnival games, rides, and amusements. To rekindle the past, I love browsing flea markets to gather sentimental items that I incorporate into my art. Whether they become central features or get tucked discreetly into the work, the addition of these nostalgic artifacts creates a visual funhouse to wander around in.
My creative practice involves keeping sessions of experimentation and analysis separate, which paradoxically allows me to blend opposing forces of risk and calculation more seamlessly. Curiosity and daring have become an exhilarating part of my process — creating both excitement and fear simultaneously — much like the carnival rides that inspire me so. My inquisitive nature leads me to try materials, tools, and techniques in a way they weren’t intended, thereby pushing the boundaries of art-making to a place that is more authentically me.
