Maximalism is my specialty, and “controlled chaos” was the name of the game for this graffitied stoplight sign. I wanted it to look like it had been repeatedly tagged by a whole crew of characters over the years, each with their own voice and unique style. So I approached the process with with playfulness, rebellion, nostalgia but also with complete precision.
Asbury Park and Tillie were always going to be the focus of my first road sign art piece, I just needed the right spark. And when I stumbled onto this old stoplight sign, it clicked… traffic light Tillies! From there, I composed the layout with Asbury’s iconic hangouts, local references, and even some of my own vinyl stickers made from past artwork — just one more nod to the different ways graffiti shows up.
What I loved most about creating this piece is how fully it lives in that sweet spot between reckless abandon and intention. That’s my favorite place to be… where the mess is meaningful, the noise is designed, and the chaos is curated.
