First Date

This unique mixed media painting is an ode to a local drive-in that’s since been torn down (still breaks my heart). There’s layers and layers of paint underneath that I sanded through, in an effort to re-create the aged, chipped appearance of the old metal and neon sign. I also added collage in the form of old book pages and scratched into the background some of the popular menu items offered at this favorite date spot. To create extra interest, I added an arrow and clown's hat breaking outside the frame, rhinestones to mimic the old vintage light bulbs, and a children’s game as the clown’s nose.

My hope is that this piece helps the Circus Drive-in live on in our hearts forever and remind others of all the first dates and good times they had there or at other roadside Americana diners.
