When I found this drum at my favorite flea market, I thought it would make the perfect funky canvas for one of my retro-style baby dolls at it’s center. Being the second piece in a graffiti-inspired series, I thoroughly enjoyed sifting through my 20-year collection of papers, collage elements, ephemera, children's books, and miscellany, to create an explosion of pop culture for the background. The result was this crazy cacophony of controlled chaos, a perfect schematic that shows how my brain works.
Little did I know how much fun I’d have painting on this musical substrate, as every time I’d put my brush to it, drumming sounds would reverberate throughout my studio!
The serendipity in this piece came in 3’s before I even knew it was happening. First with the stenciled numbers and highlighting the 3 in black. Then 3 kewpies, 3 Candyland gingerbread men, 3 sets of Tillie faces, 3 shoes, and so on. I love it when patterns show up in my art all by themselves!
